This visa is for points-tested skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory government agency.

 

This is a permanent visa category assessed against the applicant’s skills.

 

It allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident.

 

You may be eligible to apply for this visa if so invited by the Department. In addition to the invitation to apply for the visa from the Department, you must also:

 

be under 50 years of age (there are exceptions);

have nominated an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list

have obtained a suitable skills assessment for that occupation

have a Competent English level as endorsed by IELTS;

be able to pass the points test; and

be nominated by an Australian state or territory government.

When you have submitted your EOI, a state or territory government can examine it and decide whether to nominate you to apply for a visa. State and territory authorities have their own criteria for deciding who to nominate. Each state or territory government agency have different processes for nominating expressions of interests, some will contact you first and others may wait for you to contact them.

 

Invitations are based on claims that you make in your EOI, so your application must include evidence to support your claims.

 

You must score at least 60 points against points test factors to be eligible to be invited to apply for this visa. Points are awarded on the basis of several specific factors, such as age, qualifications, English language ability.

 

If you receive an invitation, you will have 60 days to apply online for the visa. During that time, you cannot change the information in your expression of interest.

 

You can be in or outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted.

Fees

There is a base fee of $3,520 for applicants wishing to apply for a subclass 189 visa.

 

There are further fees involved where eligible dependents are a part of the application.

 

You may also be required to pay other costs, such as the costs of health assessments, police certificates, or any other certificates or tests.
